After storming through Group C with only one loss in his 12 games and knocking out the defending champion in the semi-finals, no. 4 seed Tamás Gombköto (HUN), 15, became the 2004 World Junior Champion when he beat no. 7 seed (and fellow qualifier from Group C) Niklas Andersson (SWE), 13, in the Final. After just a year online, during which the standard of play among the U16s generally has greatly improved, Tamás still managed to totally dominate the competition. His record in WJTC games was W 23 D 2 L 6 and half of his losses came in the only match in which his form stuttered a little, his QF against 2002 runner-up Brett Laishley (AUS) which went to a tiebreak.

Apart from being glad that this is Tamás' last year as an U16, last year's winner Simon Wright (GBR), 14, whose title defence has been very eventful (he needed a big win in his last group match to scrape through and avoided being taken to a tiebreak in his QF by just one tile) had to play for 3rd place against no. 8 seed Markus Andersson (SWE), 8, who lost to brother Niklas in the SFs for the second tournament in a row. Coincidentally they also met during the group phase just like the finalists and it was a surprise loss to Markus in the very first match in Group B that led to it being touch and go whether Simon would join Markus in the KO phase in the first place and led to him ending up in the nightmare half of the KO draw! 'Revenge' was sweet for Simon, who won all 6 games.

Entering NEXT year's World Junior Tantrix Championship - Jan-Feb 2005 - Notes

Who can enter?

Anyone who was born on or after 1 January 1989 may enter the 2005 World Junior Tantrix Championship. There is no minimum ranking qualification for entering the tournament. Please do not lie about your age because you will be cheating everyone, including yourself. We reserve the right to request evidence of age from the winner (eg. a copy of a birth certificate) before presenting a prize if we have any reason to believe that they are not genuinely under 16 at the end of 2004.

Tournament format and how often you will need to play:

The exact format of the tournament will depend on the number of entrants, but broadly it will be as follows:

Phase 1: A group phase between mid-January and early February. These groups may be split by hemisphere to avoid serious time difference problems in Phase 1. There are expected to be between four and eight groups, with 4-8 players per group. During this phase, you will need to arrange mutually convenient times with your opponents to play an average of 2-3 matches per week, with each match consisting of three games against the same opponent and hence probably lasting 30-45 minutes.

Phase 2: A knockout phase during the rest of February for the players who finish in the top two in their groups, probably starting with a last 16 or with quarter-finals. If you qualify for this phase, you may need to play up to 3 or 4 longer matches (each lasting 1-2 hours) in three weeks.

Entry fee / Prize:

There will be no entry fee for the tournament. To go along with the prestige of being the World Junior Tantrix Champion (but to avoid making it tempting to cheat) there will be a small prize in two parts - a trophy to keep until the end of 2005 (see the picture on the right - names of winners are being engraved onto the empty space, so your achievement as the World Junior Champion will be there for all future winners to see!) and a special champions edition Tantrix Game Pack to keep.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules apply, with time penalties if a player takes 15 minutes or more for a game and scoring using the Tournament Point system. Click to see the full rules
in English, in French, in German or in Hungarian - they include notes on how to arrange games, what to do if an opponent does not show up and so on. There is now a shortened summary of the rules in English too.

Fair play:

Please read the 'Fair Play' section at the end of the entry form and think carefully about whether you are prepared to always play fairly before submitting your entry. PLEASE DON'T CHEAT - it just isn't clever! Email Simon (see below) if you are in any doubt about what is cheating and what is not.

We have to reserve the right to default at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot conclusively prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right and it is only ever used in extreme circumstances.

Elo ratings:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which will be used to decide seedings for future tournaments. See Tantrix Elo ratings for further information.

People you need to know about:

As last year, I am your tournament controller, Simon Wright. I play under "shunter" in the lobby. I will be playing in the tournament, and if you have any queries about the tournament, please email me at shunter.7634@ntlworld.com.

If anyone has a problem with me (eg. if a dispute involves me as a player), please email Steven Trezise on tournaments@tantrix.co.uk, whose decision will be final.
