2004 WORLD TANTRIX CHAMPIONSHIP - PHASE 1 RESULTS
(for players outside the top 80: who is in each group, summary results, links to detailed results, ACs)
The top TWO players in each group qualify for Phase 2 and the 16 group winners with the highest
pre-tournament seeding points will avoid one of the top 32 seeded players in Round 1 of Phase 2.
Of 25 countries with entrants, 18 survived Phase 1 - sadly, ARG, PNG, RSA, SIN, SVK, TPE & TUR bowed out.
CAN, ESP, INA, IRL, POR & UKR have a sole survivor carrying their hopes into Phase 2 but the other 12 nations
(HUN, GBR, FRA, AUS, NZL, GER, USA, SWE, ISR, NED, POL, FIN) have at least three players each in Phase 2.
For full details of country-by-country performance in Phase 1 and survivors to Phase 2, click here

Apart from the fact that Jacques won it, this was one of the most unpredictable groups. The second highest-rated player in the group, Steven,
made a good start, with a big win v Greg, but then it all went wrong as he lost heavily to Jacques and then suffered a big 'upset' loss against
Czér. Greg's big win v Czér made up for him having done far worse v Steven than Czér did and when Czér lost his first 3 games v Jacques,
it looked like the lowest-rated player in the group's impressive performances might see him qualify. However, Czér managed to scrape a
1-tile win in the final game of that final match v Jacques and ended up denying the unfortunate Greg a qualification place by just 2.8 TPs!

Andrew's mini-match win v Vincent, probably the biggest shock of the tournament so far, has left this group wide open, but neither of them
qualified in the end. The group was very close until the end, with a big win for Galina v Andrew sealing 1st place for her. Paula did well to
finish 2nd, 7.9 TPs ahead of Vincent, and she will be trying to become the first Portuguese player ever to win a round in the KO phase.

With one of the performances of Phase 1, Ervin not only became the lowest-rated player to make it through to Phase 2 this year, he actually
managed to win the group. Of course, he has a better player at home to practice with than most players in Phase 1 seeding band 4, but it
was a remarkable achievement nonetheless. His compatriot Krisztian edged out the highest-rated player in the group, Pawel, for 2nd place.
