| The 2003
results implied over 800 TPs should be enough to qualify & below 760 TPs
almost certainly would not be. |
| 2004's results
concurred - 776.9 was the lowest qualifying score and 761.0 TPs was the
highest score to miss out. |
| Player N in
any team plays 3 games against player N in every other team. Top two teams on
TPs qualify for the QFs. |
| Individual
player records (all groups) in this phase |
| GBQ (games
behind last qualification place) is a different measure to TP% of how teams
are doing. The order may |
| be slightly
different if teams are very close and/or have played very different numbers
of games. Please click any |
| "GBQ" column heading for a full
explanation. Some people find GBQ a useful extra tool,
but feel free to ignore it! |

| Reigning
Champions HUN A got off to a slow start with their new young star having his
worst couple of weeks of the year |
| but soon
recovered to take the lead and pulled away to 9 games ahead in the end. There
followed an epic battle for 2nd |
| place
involving no less than four teams, with AUS B finally prevailing after
narrowly winning their match against HUN A, |
| the only team
to manage that this year. Three teams pushed them close, with no. 7 seeds USA
A just missing out and |
| RoW A doing
particularly well, given their seeding point average before the tournament,
to edge out FRA B for 4th place. |

| For the first
week or so, GBR A stormed ahead in this group with GER A also looking fairly
comfortable in 2nd, but after a |
| couple of
years in the doldrums, the Australians finally found some consistently good
form in a global competition and when |
| the Germans
began to falter, AUS A took their qualifying place away from them, even
looking to have an outside chance of |
| winning the
group at one stage. Just like their B team, HUN D did very well to finish two
places above their seeding position. |

| The only group
with no team that had Ave SPs > 1900, this was likely to be hard-fought
and so it proved. HUN B, with some |
| players whose
Elos do not yet reflect their breakthroughs in the HUN Championship. Despite
losing their match v GBR B, a |
| better
performance v NZL B in particular helped HUN B finish just 2.8 TPs ahead of
the no. 4 seeds. Amazingly, less than 3 |
| TPs separated
3rd-5th places too! First GER B and then NZL B looked like they might even
edge into 2nd at one point but |
| FRA
A, weakened by losing their first-choice no. 4 soon after the start, overtook
them both to snatch 3rd right at the end. |
