Asian and African Tantrix Championships
April - May 2005

LEARN AND PLAY TANTRIX ONLINE       3227       TANTRIX TOURNAMENTS HOMEPAGE

The Asian and African Tantrix Championships, played online, were open to all Tantrix players living in or coming from Asia or Africa. The Championships are combined into one tournament because Tantrix is not yet anywhere near as popular on these two continents as it is in the rest of the world and the highest placed player from each continent is that continent's champion.

Players from the countries whose flags are shown below took part in the 2005 Championships, which were played as a single all-play-all Final. Many congratulations to the winners - Martin Phelps (RSA), the new African Champion, and Sri Vishnu Vardhan Deevi (IND), the new Asian Champion. Jacqui Watts (RSA) and Grant Jephcott (PNG) took 2nd place in each continent, with Alison Hatton (RSA) and Gabriel Cheang (SIN) taking the 3rd places. Although the result within each continent was quite clear and each of the top three African players finished just ahead of their Asian counterparts, the differences between the Afircan and Asian players finishing in the same positions in their respective continents were all less than 2 TPs, with Jacqui and Grant both scoring 190.7 TPs and having to be separated based on the very close result in the match between them.

Notes for 2006 Entrants

All the notes are on this page - if you only want a specific section, click on one of these links:

Free entry    Elo ratings/Seeding method    Final note

Who can enter:

The Asian and African Tantrix Championships are open to players of all standards who either live in or come Asia or Africa. There is no entry fee and while there are deadlines for matches to be completed, there are no fixed match times - you arrange a mutually convenient date and time for each match with your opponents.

Even if you are new to Tantrix, this is a good chance to start getting in some tournament practice in time for the World Championship later in the year, though you might even surprise yourself in this tournament.

Please note that if you come from Africa or Asia but no longer live there, if you enter this tournament you will be treated as coming from the country you register with for the purposes of deciding your eligibility to enter any other tournaments in 2006.

Tournament format:

If we get 6-10 entrants, the tournament will probably be a round robin (where each player plays one 3-game match against each other player), with players arranging matches with each other for any time in April or May. This means that if you are away for 2 or 3 weeks during that time, you should still be ok to enter.

Please do not enter the Championship unless you intend to find the time to arrange and play all of your matches.

From April, there will be links on this page to fixture lists and results, which will be updated every day or two.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules apply eg. the time limit is 15 minutes per player per game and matches are scored using tournament points, which are mainly based on who wins and loses each game but also make some allowance for margins of victory.

Click here if you want to see the full rules or click here for just a summary of the main rules. .

Free Entry:

There is no entry fee and the winners will be able to call themselves the 2006 Asian Tantrix Champion and 2006 African Champion. In order to maintain the integrity of online tournaments, we do not seek to award big prizes in order to avoid increasing any temptation for people to try to cheat.

Elo ratings / Seeding method:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are the main factor in deciding seedings for future tournaments. See the
Elo seeding list page for details, but please note that you do NOT need to have an Elo rating in order to enter.

Final note:

The main tournament controller/s and contact/s will be announced before the start of the tournament. For now, the main contact is Steven Trezise, email
tournaments@tantrix.co.uk, and assuming that a player from NZ ends up doing most of the running of the tournament, Steven will act as the independent non-playing controller in situations where a conflict of interest might arise. In the case of disputes, the decisions of the controllers will be final. Assistant Controllers, who will be the first point of contact for players in specific sections of the draw, may be appointed later.

To avoid chaos, we have to reserve the right to default at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot conclusively prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right and it is only ever used in extreme circumstances.
