Congratulations to 9-year-old Hidde Ozinga (NED), the 2005 World Junior Tantrix Champion and the youngest-ever Tantrix tournament winner by more than three years! Playing in only his first tournament, Hidde qualified just behind 2002 and 2003 Champion and no. 2 seed Simon Wright (GBR) in Group A1, narrowly losing the mini-match between them, but after both players made their way through opposite halves of the draw to the Final, Hidde edged out Simon when it mattered most in the closest WJTC Final yet.
Only one non-European made it past the last 16 this year - no. 4 seed Jason Oliver (NZL) ended up winning the 3rd place play-off against Amy H (GBR), another very impressive tournament débutante who caused a few shocks along the way.
Simon has finished in the top three in all four WJTCs which he was eligible to enter (1st, 1st, 3rd and 2nd - coincidentally exactly the same record as Brad Swanlund has had in the last four Pan-Ams!) and over the four years in which he has done much of the work on this tournament, he has seen entrants more than double from 13 to 30 and the standard of the U16 players raised to a level at which the best juniors now go very deep into the adult tournaments too.
