Champion Zorpolotta (NZL) Jason Oliver |
The 2007 NZ Open was held at Tantrix HQ near Mapua, Nelson, from March 30 to April 1st. Fourteen players came from all over New Zealand and Australia to compete for the coveted title.
The tournament was set up with Saturday being a modified Swiss system where winners were pitted against winners and losers met losers. On the first day of the tournament mistake penalties were not assessed and only half of Saturday's points carried through to Sunday. Twelve players went on to play in the round robin final on Sunday.
Defending champion Jason Oliver got out of the blocks quickly and never looked back. World Champion Matt Peek and the number one ranked Aussie Dave Kenny both made runs but to no avail. In the end it was Hamish Watt who came closest and took home the silver medal. Matt Peek took the bronze and Tantrix inventor Mike McManaway had to settle for fourth.
