Notes for Entrants

Who can enter? Tournament format Rules
Regional teams Elo ratings/Seeding method Final note

Who can enter:

The World Team Tantrix Championship is open to everyone, though whether you will play in it or not if you enter will depend on whether you get picked for a team - each country can have multiple teams of five (plus reserves for those teams), selection of which is controlled by the overall country captain.

There is no entry fee and no specific date or time for each match, instead you arrange games with your opponents and there is a deadline for each round.

In the group phase of the tournament, you will need to arrange and play up to seven 3-game matches between mid-late January and mid-late February. If your team makes it through to the knockout phase, you will need to play an average of one 6-game match per week for up to four weeks from mid-late February depending on how long your team survives in the KO phase.

If you are on holiday during that period, it may be possible to allow for this if you give plenty of advance notice. If you are away for longer than a week, you might need to hunt for the local internet café or find a friend with a computer for some games or ask your captain to substitute you for that match. If you already know about away periods during the tournament though, please let your country captain know before team selection is finalised.

Tournament format:

If the total number of teams is 32 or less, all teams will play in the main group phase which will involve four groups of up to eight teams. From each group, the top four teams will qualify for the KO phase. If there are more than 32 teams, a preliminary round may be required for the non-'A' teams with the lowest average seeding points.

When the tournament starts, use the links at the top of this page to fixture lists and results, which will be updated automatically.

For the avoidance of doubt, any conventions re. team selection and ordering that are not specifically mentioned here can be assumed to be the same as for the 2007 WTTC.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules apply eg. the time limit is 15 minutes per player per game and matches are scored using tournament points, which are mainly based on who wins and loses each game but also make some allowance for margins of victory.

Click here if you want to see the full rules or click here for just a summary of the main rules.
The rules are also available in other languages as follows:
French le rčglement
German die Regeln
Hungarian a bajnokságok általános szabályai.

Special Rules for TEAM Tournaments
Regional teams:

Regional teams can be based on two or more linked countries (e.g. Iberia = Spain and Portugal), a continent (e.g. Rest of Europe) or Rest of the World.

However, this option exists solely to give people with hardly any other players in their country a chance to play in the WTTC. To preserve the integrity of the WTTC as primarily a competition between national teams and to prevent the creation of 'all star' multinational teams, please be aware that if your country has more than 5 entrants, you will not be eligible to play for a regional team - in that case, you can only play in one of your country's teams or be a reserve for that country.

Similarly, regional teams must be based on the smallest named geographical region that it is possible to create a team from and you must play for (or act as a reserve for) the smallest region that you are eligible to represent. e.g. If there is an Iberia team and you are Spanish or Portuguese, you cannot play for Rest of Europe or Rest of the World, you would have to act as a reserve for Iberia instead. You can start discussing regional teams whenever you like, but exactly which regional teams will be accepted will be decided in discussion with the Overall Controller once entries have closed, with captains possibly being given the chance to recruit one or more players to complete teams after the entry deadline.

Elo ratings / Seeding method:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are the main factor in deciding seedings for future tournaments. See the Elo ratings and seedings home page for details, but please note that you do NOT need to have an Elo rating in order to enter.

Team seedings will be based on the average seeding points of the members of each team as shown on the end of 2007 seeding list, or the end-November (i.e. post-WTC) seeding list if for any reason the end-December list is not available in time.

Final note:

In the case of disputes, the decision of the controller will be final. Controllers may play in the tournament, but no controller will be responsible for the section of the draw in which they are playing. In the final stages, the controller will be someone from a team that has already been knocked out.

We have to reserve the right to default and/or ban at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right - in previous tournaments it has only been very rarely necessary to make use of it and we very much hope that will continue to be the case. :-)

Please note in particular that trying to gain an unfair advantage by entering more than once, playing for someone else or letting someone else (or a computer) play for you are very serious forms of cheating. Doing so may lead to a long ban from all online Tantrix tournaments.

In order to preserve the integrity of the Championship, we may request evidence from players that they are who they say they are, unless they have already been to an offline Tantrix event or there are other trusted players who can confirm their identity. This evidence may be a copy of any id document that confirms your name and age. If we need to ask for this, we will return the copy to you or shred it immediately afterwards, whichever you prefer. N.B. There is no need to send this evidence now - you just need to be aware that if you enter, you may need to prove that you are who you say you are, but we will ask for id only if we really need to.

IMPORTANT: If you enter, please ensure that emails from tournaments@tantrix.co.uk, auto@tantrix.co.uk (and, once the tournament starts, emails from your AC, team captain and opponents) will not be blocked under any circumstances and that if your email account has a low quota, you do not let it get too full. This is because if we are unable to contact you by email for an extended period, we may be left with no option but to default you out of the competition.

Boring but important ...

1) We have to reserve the right to default and/or ban at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right - in previous tournaments it has only been very rarely necessary to make use of it and we very much hope that will continue to be the case.

2) We have had two instances in the last four years of people using different names to enter the World Championship more than once in the same year. This is grossly unfair to the other players so, in order to protect the integrity of the major Tantrix tournaments and to be fair to the vast majority of players who are honest, we reserve the right to request evidence of identity from participants during the tournament if this is felt to be necessary at any stage and to disqualify anyone who cannot prove that they are who they say they are if requested to do so. This is unlikely to affect you, but you need to be aware of this possibility before entering.

3) If you enter, please ensure that emails from tournaments@tantrix.co.uk and auto@tantrix.co.uk (and, once the tournament starts, emails from your AC and opponents) will not be blocked under any circumstances. This is because if we are unable to contact you by email for an extended period, we may have to default you out of the competition and this may lead to a ban from future tournaments.

4) If you enter this tournament, please ensure that you have anti-virus software that is updated regularly on the computer you use to email your opponents.
