The top three with their prizes
The third British Open Table Tantrix Championship took place at the provincial Mind Sports Olympiad event in Cambridge on Saturday & Sunday 1 & 2 May 2004. Nearly 50 Tantrix players played, controlled the tournament or spectated, with 35 actually taking part in the biggest table Tantrix tournament yet. It was a fantastic tournament from top to bottom, with the play more intense than ever and the atmosphere friendlier than ever. The Tantrix-themed clothing was once again brought out for the occasion - you can see some of it on the group photo. 21 entrants from the UK were joined by 14 players from overseas, with the countries represented being:

After losing the trophy to the Netherlands last year, the UK players were determined to keep it at home this year. Six of them qualified for the final eight along with two Scandinavian players - neither the Dutch nor the Hungarian ITMs made it that far. The eventual winner, going one better than last year with a stunning 14 wins out of 14 over the two days, was no. 2 seed Rob Morton (ENG). Perhaps the most amazing performance of the weekend though came from 14-year-old no. 14 seed Niklas Andersson (SWE) who finished 2nd. No. 5 seed Tom McCoy (ENG) took the bronze medal and has now finished in the top three every year - his 1st/3rd/3rd sequence mirrors that of a famous Hungarian player in the first three European Championships ...

Niklas Andersson (SWE) also won the junior gold medal, followed by Eleanor Gordon (ENG) and Simon Wright (NIR), while the 'Rising Stars' gold went to Kati Karlsson (FIN), the silver to Paul Smith (ENG) and the bronze to Karen King (ENG), with Niklas, Eleanor and Paul all managing to finish more than ten places higher than expected in the overall classification!

Note on Elos: Those who finished outside the top 4 in a Saturday group played in a consolation tournament on Sunday
where their position on Saturday made no difference except that those who finished in 5th place in a group will not have
had to play anyone else who finished 5th, and so on. Hence, 17th-34th places are based almost solely on Sunday play.
However, the Elo ratings for this tournament will weight Saturday and Sunday play equally, so those who did well on
Saturday but not on Sunday are likely to find that their Elos will be higher than some of those who finished above them.
Equally, those with high finishes in the 9th-16th place group may well find themselves with higher BOTTC-only Elos than
those near the bottom of the 1st-8th place group. The number of game wins is shown as a rough guide (and it is good to
see that everyone won at least two games!), but the actual TP scores and who you played against will have a big effect.

Yes, that's right, they are all playing Tantrix!
