5th British Open Table Tantrix Championship
at City University, London

The overall top three with their prizes
Intense, exciting and above all very friendly, the British Open is open to players of all standards from all over the world and this year's entrants came from the countries whose flags can be seen below. It was held at City University with most players staying at the LSE's Rosebery Hall and enjoying a group meal on Saturday evening held at Strada restaurant in Exmouth Market.

No. 8 seed Attila 'the Hun' Mikulán (HUN) lived up to his daunting reputation by emerging triumphant from a tumultuous battle with the top three seeds to win the 5th British Open Table Tantrix Championship after a nail-biting final round where he won his own game and two other crucial results went his way. No. 2 seed Zoltán Németh ITM (HUN) won the silver medal by scoring a big enough win against no. 1 seed Niklas Andersson TTM (SWE) to knock him off the top spot that he had held for most of the day. However, Niklas prevented a second consecutive Hungarian clean sweep by hanging on for the bronze.

The top UK finisher was 2004 British Open Champion Rob Morton TTM ITM from Knaresborough, who did everything he could in his final game, creating lookalike after lookalike while trying to defend a 9-tile loop only for the crucial tile to eventually fall into his opponent's hands, leaving him in 4th place. Belfast's Simon Wright (6th), Twickenham's Rick Yagodich (7th) & Aberdeen's Mauro Lazzara (8th) also reached the Final.

Attila also won the under-18 gold medal for the second year running, with Niklas taking silver (and thus completing a set of all three junior medals in the last three years!) and Simon bronze. With the juniors having dominated the main event over the last couple of years as well, there were calls for 'veterans' medals to be introduced next year!

Once again, there was home success in the 'Rising Stars' competition for lower-rated players, with Angharad Taylor (ENG) from Canterbury winning the gold medal and the top newcomer prize by some distance, Graham Purnell (ENG) from Radstock (the husband of last year's Rising Star winner Esther), the silver and Claire Hynde (IoM) from Dersingham the bronze.
