Hey guys,

Dday one of the nz has been run and won...(well sort of!)

The 16 entrants came from 5 countries; New Zealand (11), Finland (2), USA (2), Australia (1) and Hungary (1).

There were two groups of eight players as follows:

The Final Results!!!

Although I don't have the exact scores here, I can give you a summary of the QF's, SF's, 3PP and the Final.

QF - Mike def. Tuomo

QF - Heli def. Seb

QF - Brad def. Scottie

QF - Jason def. Britta

Therefore, SFs are Mike vs Heli and Brad vs Jason

Mike defeated Heli 3 games to 2 in a tight match that came down to the dying moves of the final game

Jason defeated Brad convincingly 4-1, winning the first four games to well and truely qualify to the final.

3PP Heli vs Brad

In what was a slightly less serious affair, Heli and Brad squared off for the 3rd and 4 spots, in what turned out to be a tight match. Heli won through 3-2 in what was a winner takes all match.

THE FINAL

Mike vs Jason

G1 - Jason wins 18-17

G2 - Mike wins 14-11

G3 - Mike wins 32-15

G4 - Jason wins 27-19

As the players went into the final game, Mike needed only a draw, whereas Jason needed to win. With no tiebreaker rules in this tournament it really was a case of winner takes all.

In a game that came right down to the final tile in the bag, Mike's early 16 point loop was not enough to stop Jason from joining his two short-ish lines to make 19 and to become the New Zealand Open Champion.
