End-1999 Tantrix Online Tournament Elo Ratings

The end-1999 Elo ratings for 63 players can be found below. The average rating has been increased slightly too, but the rating system is now reasonably stable, ready to be updated on a tournament by tournament basis in 2000.

As previously promised, in order to limit distortions, all ratings have been recalculated as if all 616 tournament games played in 1999 were a single tournament. With each run of the calculations, rating changes affect AORs which lead to more rating changes. The calculations were iterated about 100 times until the ratings of all 63 players were consistent with each other, i.e. did not change any further with additional iterations. The ratings for each tournament have been recalculated accordingly too, to show how players' performance in different tournaments varied.

The first ratings of the year 2000 will be posted in mid-May, soon after the last few games in the Pan-American Championship have been played.

Ratings based on a low number of games or on performances in a single tournament are not very reliable at all, so there are two rating lists below:

1. The Official List - includes those with G >= 15, where G is a measure of the number of games played - see the notes after the lists. This generally means that players have played in more than one tournament or have reached the semi-final stage of the World Championship or of one of the WTC Plate competitions. The ratings based on a single tournament should still be treated with the most caution.

2. The Unofficial List - includes those with G < 15, all of whom have only played in one tournament. If you need any convincing that ratings based only on a single tournament are less reliable, note that four of the top five players in the unofficial list have higher overall ratings than people who finished well ahead of them in the tournament each of them actually played in - it's very hard to maintain 1900-1950+ performance over two or more events.

The best way to compare those on the official and unofficial rating lists is to look at the Tournament Seeding List.

If you want to check that I have not 'fixed' the ratings ;-), please email me and ask for the Excel spreadsheet with all of the data and calculations

For a key to what the columns mean, see below the rating list. Click on one or more of the links at the bottom of the page for notes, explanations, rating rules, tournament categories and Tantrix Master titles - comments are welcome.

Single tournament performances at ITM norm level (> 2000 - see the
titles section) are in red, as is the bonus ITM norm for winning the WTC

The order of individual tournament ratings for all-play-all tournaments will closely match the positions in the tournament itself. However, in a knockout tournament, finishing positions and ratings will sometimes tell a very different story. The player who wins a knockout tournament may well not get the top rating for that tournament, especially if they had a relatively easy draw and/or only just scraped through some of their matches.

In the same way, taking the ratings as a whole, the Elo World No. 1 should be the strongest player overall (there still haven't been anywhere near enough tournaments to say this for certain though and the No. 1 in the list has only played in one, albeit the biggest one), whereas the World Champion may be the player who is best at repeatedly doing just enough to win at the crucial times in matches - both of these are impressive!

Key:

Pos is the player's position, a bold number if in the official list. To compare those in the official and unofficial lists reasonably fairly,
Click here for the Tournament Seeding list as at 31 January 2000.

T is the number of tournaments in which the player has played at least one game, with the WTC and Plate competitions counted as the same event.

G for a tournament is a measure of the number of games played. It is one for each game played in an event where one or two games are played against each opponent. For matches of three or more games, only an extra half is counted for each game after the second. TP % and AOR are also de-weighted accordingly, though each game in a match is given equal weighting in finding the TP % for that particular match. For more details, please see section 4) (amended at the end of August) on the rating method page.

TP % is the average (weighted by G) percentage of possible tournament points scored by the player in their games.

Fctr is the performance factor implied by TP %, read off an inverse normal distribution, as described on the rating method page.

AOR is the average (weighted by G) of the Elo ratings of the player's opponents - the higher the AOR, the better the opponents the player has played on average. In the Elo calculation, this allows for the fact that it is much easier to get a high TP % against weaker opponents.

* Elo * Rating is the player's overall Elo rating for 1999. It is equal to the AOR plus the performance factor based on the TP %. If this is one or two more than the sum of the figures in the table, don't worry - all the figures in the table are rounded but the figures actually used in the calculations are precise and normalisation of the results adds about 1 to every player's rating too. In future years, an exponential-type decay factor will be built in to gradually reduce the effect of tournaments played a long time ago

Individual Tournament Ratings show how stable or variable a player's performance has been in different tournaments.

Contl includes all single-continent Championships - if you click on this, you will need to click on the results sheet for the tournament concerned to find the full results.
