Current Tantrix Online Tournament Elo Ratings

The end of 2000 ratings for 105 players based on a total of 1310 tournament games played can be found below. This year's World Championship ("WTC") and the de-weighting by 0.5 of results from last year's WTC has, as expected, resulted in big changes at the top.

Julia Schwarz (GBR), the new World Tantrix Champion, is now also top of the tournament Elo ratings, followed by Matt Kearse (NZL) and Steven Trezise (GBR) - in the 1999 WTC, those with big wins over top-rated players did not reach the final and the finalists did not end up top of the ratings. This year's WTC top three did have spectacular wins against the top players, with the result that they have ended up at the top of the list, with Ben Trumbore (USA), the only player to have won two tournaments (both Pan-Am Championships), in 4th and WTC 4th placed Mike McManaway (NZL) in 5th.

5th to 14th place in the official ratings are very close. Indeed, 1999 World Champion Zenon Kowalczyk (AUS) in 6th and previous Elo no. 1 Matt Peek (NZL) are separated by just 0.09 of a rating point!

WTC Plate winner Alexei Drummond (NZL) obtained a rating of over 1900 for the WTC as a whole, about that of a quarter-finalist in the main event, and his overall rating increased by no less than 202 from 1625 to 1827, putting him in the top 20 overall. The other big gainer in the official list was Jason (AUS), up from 15th to 11th even after three players previously in the unofficial list slotted in above him.

Apart from Matt Peek, those dropping more than 5 places in the official list are all strong players who are likely to climb back up the list quickly in 2001. Britta Steude (NZL) dropped from 3rd to 13th after first match losses in both the WTC and the Plate, where she had tricky draws. Justin Phillips (NZL) dropped from 8th to 17th after his amazing rating from last year's WTC was de-weighted and he did not play in the WTC this year. Jérôme Papillon (FRA), dropped from 12th to 19th for the same reasons as Britta. Laszlo Harsanyi (HUN), last year's Plate winner, dropped from 16th to 23rd after losing early this year.

Many other players dropped between two and four places, but this was mainly due to other strong players ending up with enough games to move them from the unofficial list to the official list.

There are a couple of very high ratings in the unofficial lists. The highest is 2074 for Gabor Szabo (HUN), but from just three games. This shows why ratings based on very few games should be treated with extreme caution since the 2074 is based mainly on one game against Murray Pharaoh. Gabor then defaulted the rest of that match - if he had played on, it is very unlikely he would have ended up with such a high rating. A more valid high unofficial rating is the 2007 of Titi (FRA) from 11 games - a big win against Steve Wiley and a very close loss to WTC no. 1 seed Matt Peek suggest she could be a very strong player, but there is not sufficient evidence yet to be sure. The World No. 1's brother, Wolfgang Schwarz (GER) on 1960, also looks set for a high place in the official list if he plays (and wins) a few more games in 2001.

The calculation of G has changed for 2000 and future years. It is now simply the number of games played, though weightings of old games continue to be reduced every twelve months. This change has been applied retrospectively to pre-WTC games played during 2000 but did not change anyone's rating significantly.

Ratings based on a low number of games or on performances in a single tournament are not very reliable at all, so there are two rating lists below:

1. The Official List - includes those with G >= 20, where G is a measure of the number of games played - see the notes after the lists. The ratings based on a single tournament should still be treated with caution.

2. The Unofficial List - includes those with G < 20, virtually all of whom have only played in one tournament. If you need any convincing that ratings based only on a single tournament are less reliable, note that some of the top players in the unofficial list have higher overall ratings than people who finished well ahead of them in the tournament each of them actually played in - it is very hard to maintain 1900-1950+ performance over two or more events.

The best way to compare those on the official and unofficial rating lists is to look at the Tournament Seeding List.

If you want to check that I have not 'fixed' the ratings ;-), please email me and ask for the Excel spreadsheet with all of the data and calculations

For a key to what the columns mean, see below the rating list. Click on one or more of the links at the bottom of the page for notes, explanations, rating rules, tournament categories and Tantrix Master titles - comments are welcome.

Single tournament performances in 2000 at ITM norm level (> 2000 - see the
titles section) are in red, as is the bonus ITM norm for winning the WTC

The order of individual tournament ratings for all-play-all tournaments will closely match the positions in the tournament itself. However, in a knockout tournament, finishing positions and ratings will sometimes tell a very different story. The player who wins a knockout tournament may well not get the top rating for that tournament, especially if they had a relatively easy draw and/or only just scraped through some of their matches.

Key:

Pos is the player's position, a bold number if in the official list. To compare those in the official and unofficial lists reasonably fairly, Click here for the current Tournament Seeding list.

Last is the player's position on the previous rating list - UNO means that the player was previously on the unofficial list and has now played enough games get over the G=20 threshold for getting onto the official list and NEW means the player has just played their first tournament.

T is the number of tournaments in which the player has played at least one game, with the WTC and Plate competitions counted as the same event.

G for a tournament is a measure of the number of games played. Previously a little more complex, for 2000 it is one for each game played, with the weighting of games played in previous years halved after every twelve months. TP % and AOR are also de-weighted accordingly after each 12 month period. For more details, please see section 4) on the rating method page.

* Elo * Rating is the player's overall Elo rating.

Time Decay Factors show the factors being applied to G for each tournament. Each full year after a tournament is played, G from that tournament is halved, hence halving the weighting of each player's rating from this tournament. This is designed to stop someone staying in the official list when they haven't played many tournament games for a long time and to ensure that the most recent results have the greatest (but not the only ...) effect on the overall rating.

Individual Tournament Ratings show how stable or variable a player's performance has been in different tournaments.

Contl includes all single-continent Championships - if you click on this, you will need to click on the results sheet for the tournament concerned to find the full results.

On individual tournament results sheets, in the Elo rating section:

TP % is the average (weighted by G) percentage of possible tournament points scored by the player in their games.

Fctr is the performance factor implied by TP %, read off an inverse normal distribution, as described on the rating method page.

AOR is the average (weighted by G) of the Elo ratings of the player's opponents - the higher the AOR, the better the opponents the player has played on average. In the Elo calculation, this allows for the fact that it is much easier to get a high TP % against weaker opponents.
