(11-12 Aug) Tantrix pro Britta Steude (NZL) won the Final against Bevan Chong (NZL) by just 60.3-59.7 TPs, the sum of both players' tile scores being 127. Congratulations to Britta, who also won the May Open in 1999 and has become only the second player to win two tournaments and the first to win two different ones, Ben Trumbore having won two consecutive Pan-Ams. Both players will get ITM norms for this tournament for over-2000 Elo single tournament performances and both will be high up in the World Championship seedings.

Andrew Swan (AUS) saved some Australian pride by beating 2000 Pacific Champion Murray Pharaoh (NZL) for 3rd place by 54.9-45.1 TPs, despite dropping no less than five time penalties in the second (14-14) game. There has now been one Australian in the top three each year, though all three winners have been from NZ.

The score in trans-Tasman matches was NZL 3-2 AUS, pretty close but all of the Australian losses were 4 games to 0 whitewashes. However, all of the Australians in this event were new to tournaments this year, so hopefully they will come back stronger next year. The updated pre-WTC Elo ratings and potential seedings list are now available.
