Notes for Entrants

These notes have been retained for reference. All the notes are on this page - if you only want a specific section, click on one of these links:

Who can enter?    Tournament format    Rules
Free Entry/Prizes/Buybacks    Elo ratings/Seeding method    Final note

Who can enter:

The World Tantrix Championship is open to everyone. There is no entry fee and no specific date or time you have to play each round (you arrange this with your opponent) so we hope all Tantrix players, from the strongest to the newest, will enter!

Even if you are new to Tantrix, if you enter now, you have plenty of time to become a proficient player - in fact, a
recent tournament was won by a player who was at the bottom of the Lobby ranking list not so many months ago.

Assuming you make progress in the event, you will need to play an average of a match every week or two between September and early November, but don't worry if you are on holiday for a week or two during that period - we can allow for that if you let us know. If you're away for longer than that, you might need to hunt for the local internet café or find a friend with a computer for a game or two! :-)

Tournament format:

The tournament will be a knockout competition, with the strongest players seeded to avoid each other in the early rounds (see below), as in tennis for example.

Matches will consist of 3 games against the other player, rising in the later rounds, though difficult to arrange matches can be played out of less games if both players agree. To allow for margins of victory, the games will be scored on the Tournament Point system, which means that (for example) in a 5 game match, 2 very big wins and 3 small losses can sometimes be just enough to win.

In September, there will be links on this page to fixture lists and results, which will be updated frequently.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules apply, with 15 minutes 59 seconds allowed per player per game and scoring using the Tournament Point system.
Click here to see the full rules - they include notes on how to arrange games, what to do if an opponent does not show and so on.

Free Entry/Prizes/Buybacks:

There is no entry fee and you can win the tournament without ever paying anything.

As well as the title of 1999 World Champion, there will be a trophy or medal as a prize. Once we have a longer track record, we hope we might be able to get sponsorship for tournaments like this as well.

Elo ratings / Seeding method:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are to be used to decide seedings for future tournaments. See
Tantrix Elo ratings for further information. The seeding method for this event allows those with only lobby rankings to be seeded too - see Seeding method & list and Example Draw for full details.

Final note:

In the case of disputes, the decision of the controller will be final. Controllers may be playing in the tournament, but no controller will be responsible for the section of the draw in which they are playing in. In the final stages, the controller will be someone who has already been knocked out.

We have to reserve the right to default at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we can't prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right and in previous tournaments it has not been necessary to make use of it and we very much hope that will continue to be the case. :-)
