Notes for Entrants (retained here for reference)

All the notes are on this page - if you only want a specific section, click on one of these links:

Who can enter?    Tournament format    Tournament timing
Qualification    Rules    Free entry    Elo ratings

Who can enter:

This tournament is open to everyone living in Europe. New and improving players are just as welcome to enter as the stronger players. If you're new, then even if you lose in qualifying you will have got some good experience - but who knows, you might surprise yourself and reach the final anyway! :-) You do not need an Elo rating in order to enter.

Tournament format:

The final of the tournament will be a 9-round, 10-player all-play-all, with each player playing a single game against every other player. Qualification for the final will be decided by seeding points (based on Elo ratings) and (if necessary) a short knockout competition with matches arranged between the closing date and the date of the final.

Tournament timing:

The final will be played on Sunday 9 April between the following times, with a rest break of about 50 minutes in the middle:

12.00 - 18.00 GMT
13.00 - 19.00 (1 pm - 7 pm) British Summer Time (& Portugal)
14.00 - 20.00 (2 pm - 8 pm) Central European Time (eg. France)
15.00 - 21.00 (3 pm - 9 pm) Eastern European time (eg. Finland)

You may need to play one or two short qualifying matches between Monday 13 March and Friday 7 April, with players arranging times to play between themselves as in the 1999 World Championship. It should be easier to arrange games with your opponent/s in this case because you will all be in similar time zones.

Qualification:

Péter Petrecz (HUN), the defending champion, will qualify for the final all-play-all automatically if he enters by the closing date.

Of the other entrants, the three with the highest numbers of
seeding points (click the BACK button on your browser to return here after viewing the seedings page) will also qualify automatically. These players will be Laurent Berguin (FRA), Steven Trezise (GBR) and Jérôme Papillon (FRA) if they enter - if they don't enter, players further down the list may qualify automatically.

The remaining six players in the final will be decided by knockout qualifying matches, to be played between 13 March and 7 April. You are unlikely to have to play more than two qualifying matches. Seeding points will be used to seed the qualifying competition. Those who lose qualifying matches will be reserves for the final (in seeding point order) if a qualifier withdraws before the final starts.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules will apply, with 15 minutes 59 seconds allowed per player per game and scoring using the Tournament Point system.
Click here to see the full rules.

Entry fee / Prizes:

There is no entry fee and therefore no prizes, but if you win, you will be able to call yourself "2000 European Tantrix Champion" and hopefully will have a lot of fun playing in a really competitive tournament.

The 1999 World Championship had sponsored prizes and once we have a longer track record, we hope we might be able to get sponsorship for other tournaments too. For now, though, you are playing for 'honour' and Elo rating points!

Elo ratings:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are used to decide seedings for future tournaments, including the World Championship, and to decide the Tournament World No. 1 player. Official ratings will be updated soon after the end of April, when both the European and Pan-American Championships have finished. See
Tantrix Elo ratings for further information.
