2000 Pacific Online Tantrix Championship
Murray Pharaoh(NZL) wins the Final on 13 Aug.

This tournament covered the players in Oceania and there were 9 entrants from two countries. With none of the top 6 eligible players taking part (some of them are currently on the other side of the world!) it was always going to be a very open tournament. Jason (AUS), playing from Washington DC between midngiht and 6 am, lost to Murray Pharaoh (NZL) in Round 1 but won his next four games to build up a seemingly unassailable lead. A draw and a loss in the last two rounds saw Jason leave the door open for Murray who took full advantage! Justin Phillips (NZL) was 3rd, just one tournament point ahead of NZ champion Phil Sneddon. Notes for Entrants (retained here for reference)

All the notes are on this page - if you only want a specific section, click on one of these links:

Who can enter?    Tournament format    Tournament timing
Qualification    Rules    Free entry    Elo ratings

Who can enter:

This tournament is open to everyone living in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and the Pacific islands. New and improving players are just as welcome to enter as the stronger players. If you're new, then even if you lose in qualifying you will have got some good experience - but who knows, you might surprise yourself and reach the final anyway! :-) You do not need an Elo rating in order to enter.

Tournament format:

The final of the tournament will be a 9-round, 10-player all-play-all, with each player playing a single game against every other player. Qualification for the final will be decided by seeding points (based on Elo ratings) and (if necessary) a short knockout competition with matches arranged between the closing date for entries and the date of the final.

Tournament timing:

The all-play-all final will be played on Sunday 13 August 2000 between:

04.00-10.00 GMT(=UT)

14.00-20.00 Sydney (AUS) time

16.00-22.00 New Zealand time

There will be a rest break of about 50 minutes in the middle.

You may need to play a couple of short qualifying matches between Thursday 27 July and Friday 11 August, with players arranging times to play between themselves as in the 1999 World Championship. It should be easier to arrange games with your opponent/s in this case because you will all be in similar time zones.

Qualification:

Mike McManaway (NZL), the defending champion, will qualify for the final all-play-all automatically if he enters by the closing date.

Of the other entrants, the three with the highest numbers of
seeding points (click the BACK button on your browser to return here after viewing the seedings page) will also qualify automatically. Seeding points will be updated in July after the NZ Championship.

The remaining six players in the final will be decided by knockout qualifying matches, to be played between 27 July and 11 August. Seeding points will also be used to seed the qualifying competition. Those who lose qualifying matches will be reserves for the final if a qualifier withdraws before the final starts.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules will apply, with time penalties applying after 16 minutes per player per game and scoring using the Tournament Point system.
Click here to see the full rules.

Entry fee / Prizes:

There is no entry fee and therefore no prizes, but if you win, you will be able to call yourself "2000 Pacific Tantrix Champion" and hopefully will have a lot of fun playing in a really competitive tournament.

The 1999 World Championship had sponsored prizes and once we have a longer track record, we hope we might be able to get sponsorship for other tournaments too. For now, though, you are playing for 'honour' and Elo rating points!

Elo ratings:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are used to decide seedings for future tournaments, including the World Championship, and to decide the Tournament World No. 1 player. See
Tantrix Elo ratings for further information.
