Who can enter: Tournament timing:
List of Tournament 1-2-3's The date and time are : This file was last modified on Monday, 31-Mar-2003 00:20:43 BST
This tournament is open to everyone living in Europe. New and improving players are just as welcome to enter as the stronger players and you do not need an Elo rating in order to enter.
If you were born in Europe but no longer live there, then in any one year you can enter either this tournament (if you are willing to play at times convenient for those in Europe) or the continental championship for where you live, but not both.
Tournament format:
The tournament will be played as a 10-player all-play-all with each player playing against every other player. So you would need to arrange to play against two opponents per week on average. * NOTE * Given the high number of entrants, the format may be changed (eg. two or more smaller all-play-all groups followed by a knockout phase) to avoid having to eliminate too many people after only one qualifying match.
All games should be played between Friday 4 May and Sunday 10 June where possible. Players should arrange times to play between themselves by email. It should be easier to arrange games with your opponents than in the World Championship because you will all be in similar time zones and you do not need to arrange long matches.
Anyone who has not played at least one-third of their games by 17 May risks being defaulted unless it is clear that they have already arranged most of their remaining games or are making a big effort to do so. Having said that, if you are away for a week or two during the tournament or you are having trouble arranging games for any reason, we can usually cope with this but you must keep the tournament controller fully informed in such cases.
Rules:
The standard tournament rules will apply as in previous years. However, the time limit has reduced by a minute to 15 minutes and you will be penalised for going over 14:59 this year.
Also, as an experiment, tournament points will not be rounded to the nearest whole number this year. The same underlying formula will be used but, for example, a win by three tiles will now be worth more than a win by two tiles instead of both scoring 14 TPs to 6.
Click here to see the full rules in English, French or German.
Entry fee / Prizes:
There is no entry fee and therefore no prizes, but if you win, you will be able to call yourself "2001 European Tantrix Champion" and hopefully will have a lot of fun playing in a really competitive tournament. So, you will be playing for 'honour' and Elo rating points, the latter helping to improve your seeding for this year's World Championship!
Elo ratings:
All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are used to decide seedings for future tournaments, including the World Championship, and to decide the Tournament World No. 1 player. Official ratings will be updated in June, when both the European and Pan-American Championships have finished. See Tantrix Elo ratings for the end-2000 ratings and further information.
If you have any questions before entering, please click here to email the pre-tournament controller, Steven Trezise. There will be a non-European controller for the main part of the tournament - details to follow later.
