Congratulations to 12-year-old Simon Wright (GBR) from Belfast in Northern Ireland (see left) who has become the first World Junior Tantrix Champion! The tournament was open to all Tantrix players under the age of 16 and 15 of the top juniors in the world entered. After a very close group phase involving the best young players from both hemispheres and the odd default (U16 players seem a bit less willing than the adults to persevere once there is little chance of them qualifying), the top four players did battle in the knockout phase.
After two close semi-finals, The third place match was very tight before Aron Hadarits (HUN) emerged victorious by 62.9-57.1 with a win in the last. No. 1 seed Simon Wright saved his best form for the Final though. After he and Brett Laishley (AUS) each won one of the first two games, Simon won three of the last four (drawing the other game) to record a massive 79.7-49.3 TPs win. Amazingly, all of the top three places were filled by players under 14 though more than half of the original entrants were older than that.

For reference, the original notes for entrants can be found below:
Who can enter?
Anyone who was born on or after 1 January 1986 may enter the 2002 World Junior Tantrix Championship. There is no minimum ranking qualification for entering the tournament. Please do not lie about your age because you will be cheating everyone, including yourself. We reserve the right to request evidence of age from the winner (eg. a copy of a birth certificate) before presenting a prize if we have any reason to believe that they are not genuinely under 16 at the end of 2001.
Once the draw is known, you will need to contact each opponent to arrange matches at mutually convenient times and you will probably need to be able to play an average of about two 2-game matches or one long match per week during the tournament.
Tournament format:
The exact format of the tournament will depend on the number of entrants, but it may consist of all-play-all groups and/or knockout matches and northern and southern hemisphere players may be kept apart in the early stages to avoid serious time difference problems.
Entry fee / Prize:
There will be no entry fee for the tournament. To go along with the prestige of being the first ever World Junior Tantrix Champion, but to avoid making it tempting to cheat, there will be a small prize in two parts - a trophy to keep until the end of 2002 (see the picture on the right - names of winners will be engraved onto the empty space, so your achievement as the first ever World Junior Champion will be there for all future winners to see!) and a special champions edition Tantrix Game Pack to keep.
Rules:
The standard tournament rules apply, with time penalties if a player takes 15 minutes or more for a game and scoring using the Tournament Point system. Click to see the full rules in English, in French or in German - they include notes on how to arrange games, what to do if an opponent does not show up and so on. There is now a shortened summary of the rules in English too.
Fair play:
Please read the 'Fair Play' section at the end of the entry form and think carefully about whether you are prepared to always play fairly before submitting your entry. PLEASE DON'T CHEAT - it just isn't clever! Email me (see below) if you are in any doubt about what is cheating and what is not.
We have to reserve the right to default at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot conclusively prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right and it is only ever used in extreme circumstances.
Elo ratings:
All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which will be used to decide seedings for future tournaments. See Tantrix Elo ratings for further information - the end of 2001 ratings will appear before the end of December.
People you need to know about:
I am your tournament controller, Simon Wright. I play under "shunter" in the lobby. I will be playing in the tournament, and if you have any queries about the tournament, please email me at wrong_is_wright@hotmail.com.
If anyone has a problem with me (eg. if a dispute involves me as a player), please email Steven Trezise on tournaments@tantrix.co.uk, whose decision will be final.
