2nd Australian Tantrix Championship
Josh Button (NSW) won the Final on 30 May 2002

No. 8 seed Josh Button, 23, from Penrith NSW has become the second Australian Tantrix Champion with an emphatic 79.5-40.5 win in the Final against no. 7 seed and Group B winner Graeme Jolliffe, 29, from Lawson NSW. Josh only came 3rd in Group A but improved markedly in the KO phase. He won the first five games in the Final, having also fended off top seed and runaway Group A winner Leah Sanders (QLD) in the SFs. Funnily enough, as in this year's European Championship, the 3/4 place playoff is a family affair between Leah and her husband Anthony Sanders. We are very grateful to Kevin Scott (GBR) for controlling this often difficult tournament. The entrants came from the following five states:

6   5   2   2   1

Notes for Entrants

All the notes are on this page - if you only want a specific section, click on one of these links:

Who can enter?    Tournament format    Rules
Free entry    Elo ratings/Seeding method    Final note

Who can enter:

The Australian Tantrix Championship is open to everyone who lives in Australia or who comes from Australia. There is no entry fee and while there are deadlines for matches to be completed, you arrange a mutually convenient date and time for each match with your opponent. We hope all Tantrix players from Australia, from the strongest to the newest, will enter!

Even if you are new to Tantrix, this is a good chance to start getting in some tournament practice in time for the World Championship later in the year - you might even surprise yourself in this tournament.

Please note that if you come from Australia but no longer live there, you should enter only if you are willing to play the majority of your games at times convenient to those in Australia (i.e. mainly their evenings and weekends) and if you do enter this tournament, you should not also enter the continental/national championship for the country where you now live.

Tournament format:

The exact format of the tournament will depend on the number of entrants, but it will almost certainly start with a group section so that everyone gets to play a few other players. Seedings will be used to keep the strongest players apart in the early stages whatever the format.

Group matches will consist of one or two games against each opponent and knockout matches, if any, will consist of six games against the other player and to allow for margins of victory, the games will be scored using the Tournament Point system.

In March, there will be links on this page to fixture lists and results, which will be updated every day or two.

Rules:

The standard tournament rules apply. There are only a few minor changes this year and the time limit is still 15 minutes per player per game.

Click here if you want to see the full rules or click here for just a summary of the main rules.

Free Entry:

There is no entry fee and the winner will be able to call themselves the 2002 Australian Tantrix Champion.

Elo ratings / Seeding method:

All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are to be used to decide seedings for future tournaments. See
Tantrix tournament Elo ratings for further information. The seeding method is based on these ratings - see the Seeding method & list for full details.

Final note:

The non-playing controller will be Steven Trezise, email
tournaments@tantrix.co.uk In the case of disputes, the decision of the controller will be final. Assistant controllers, who may be playing in the tournament, will be appointed later.

We have to reserve the right to default at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot conclusively prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right and it is only ever used in extreme circumstances.
