The World Tantrix Championship ("WTC"), played online, is open to Tantrix players from all over the world. Last year's World Tantrix Championship attracted 172 entrants from the 25 countries whose flags are shown above.
2008 marks the tenth anniversary of the first World Tantrix Championship and also the tenth time it has been held as a dedicated tournament. The reigning World Champion is Mike McManaway ITM (NZL) and past winners have represented NZ (5 times), the UK (3 times), Hungary (once) and Australia (once), with four-time champion Matt Peek TGM (NZL) the only player to have won it more than once.

Entries have now closed - it turned out to be well worth doing a final mailing and extending the deadline by a week because about 30 extra entrants mean that entries now exceed last year's total - see the updated entrant numbers by year table.
The draw for Phase 1 has now taken place and involves 109 competitors from 24 of the 25 participating countries.

Who can enter:
The World Tantrix Championship is open to everyone. There is no entry fee and no specific date or time for each match, instead you arrange games with your opponents and there is a deadline for each round.
Even if you are relatively new to Tantrix, Phase 1 (before the very top players join the competition) should not be too daunting and with the element of chance in Tantrix, there is always a possibility of springing a surprise later in the Championship, even against the best players in the world.
In Phase 1 of the tournament (for those outside the top 64 entrants on the seeding list), you will need to play about four short matches between mid-August and early September and if you make it through to Phase 2 (the knockout phase), you will need to play an average of one 6-game match every ten days or so for as long as you survive in the tournament, between mid-September and late November.
If you are on holiday during that period, we can allow for that if you give us plenty of advance notice. If you are away for longer than a week in Phase 2 or for longer than about two weeks in Phase 1 though, you might need to find the local internet café or make alternative arrangements for some games.
Draft Timetable for 2008
Tournament format:
The main phase of the tournament will be a knockout competition, with the strongest players seeded to avoid each other in the early rounds.
As usual, there will be 128 players in the Phase 2 knockout draw. Depending on the number of entrants, at least 64 of these entrants (exactly 64 if the number of entrants is 192 or more) will qualify for Phase 2 automatically based on their tournament seeding points in the 31 July seeding list (see below), while the lower-rated entrants will need to qualify for Phase 2 by playing in a Phase 1 qualifying group.
Matches in Phase 1 will consist of four games against each opponent in your group (such matches usually take just over an hour to play though may take up to 2 hours), rising to six games per match in the early rounds of the main draw and rising again from the quarter-finals onwards up to nine games in the Final. Games can be spread over two or more sessions.
To allow for margins of victory, the games will be scored on the Tournament Point system, which means that (for example) in a 6-game match, two very big wins, a draw and three small losses can sometimes be just enough to win.

Rules:
The standard tournament rules apply eg. the time limit is 15 minutes per player per game and matches are scored using tournament points, which are mainly based on who wins and loses each game but also make some allowance for margins of victory.

Free Entry:
There is no entry fee.
As well as the prestigious title of 2008 World Tantrix Champion, there will be medals for the top three to keep and you will get your name on the World Championship trophy. However, most people play in Tantrix tournaments to have fun (the World Championship is the biggest event of the year in the Tantrix lobby, and there is always a real buzz in the lobby while it is on!) and to find out how good they really are.
Elo ratings / Seeding method:
All games played will count towards the Tantrix Tournament Elo Ratings which are the main factor in deciding seedings for future tournaments. See the Elo ratings and seedings home page for details, but please note that you do NOT need to have an Elo rating in order to enter.
Seedings will be based on the 31 July 2008 seeding list, which will be published at around the time of the confirmation deadline.
Controller discretion:
In the case of disputes, the decision of the controller will be final. Controllers may play in the tournament, but no controller will be responsible for the section of the draw in which they are playing. In the final stages, the controller will be someone who has already been knocked out.
Boring but important ...
1) We have to reserve the right to default and/or ban at our discretion people whom we have very good reason to think are either cheating or not making an effort to arrange a match, even if (given the nature of the Internet) we cannot prove it. We will not, however, abuse this right - in previous tournaments it has only been very rarely necessary to make use of it and we very much hope that will continue to be the case.
2) We have had two instances in the last four years of people using different names to enter the World Championship more than once in the same year. This is grossly unfair to the other players so, in order to protect the integrity of the major Tantrix tournaments and to be fair to the vast majority of players who are honest, we reserve the right to request evidence of identity from participants during the tournament if this is felt to be necessary at any stage and to disqualify anyone who cannot prove that they are who they say they are if requested to do so. This is unlikely to affect you, but you need to be aware of this possibility before entering.
3) If you enter, please ensure that emails from tournaments@tantrix.co.uk and auto@tantrix.co.uk (and, once the tournament starts, emails from your AC and opponents) will not be blocked under any circumstances. This is because if we are unable to contact you by email for an extended period, we may have to default you out of the competition and this may lead to a ban from future tournaments.
4) If you enter this tournament, please ensure that you have anti-virus software that is updated regularly on the computer you use to email your opponents.
