Champion shunter (GBR) Simon Wright |
Congratulations to 12-year-old Simon Wright (GBR) from Belfast in Northern Ireland (see left) who has become the first World Junior Tantrix Champion! The tournament was open to all Tantrix players under the age of 16 and 15 of the top juniors in the world entered. After a very close group phase involving the best young players from both hemispheres and the odd default (U16 players seem a bit less willing than the adults to persevere once there is little chance of them qualifying), the top four players did battle in the knockout phase.
After two close semi-finals, The third place match was very tight before Aron Hadarits (HUN) emerged victorious by 62.9-57.1 with a win in the last. No. 1 seed Simon Wright saved his best form for the Final though. After he and Brett Laishley (AUS) each won one of the first two games, Simon won three of the last four (drawing the other game) to record a massive 79.7-49.3 TPs win. Amazingly, all of the top three places were filled by players under 14 though more than half of the original entrants were older than that.
