Champion typo (GBR) Neil Jenner |
The World Tantrix Championship ("WTC") is open to Tantrix players all over the world. Now in its eighth year, it has been mentioned in the press, radio and on TV around the world. The WTC home page alone is viewed 25,000 times per year.
This year, there were a 194 confirmed entrants from a record 28 countries whose flags are shown above, with 191 of those entrants actually playing at least one match. The top 64 entrants in the 31 July seeding list automatically qualified for Phase 2 (the last 128 KO phase) and they were joined by the winners and runners-up from 32 Phase 1 groups.
After four years of domination of the world title by players from New Zealand and Hungary, none of their players reached the last eight and for the first time ever, all four semi-finalists were from the same country.
Congratulations to new World Champion no. 5 seed Neil Jenner (GBR), the UK's first World Champion for 5 years, who won the first session of the Final by 2 games to 1 and then survived two more virtually drawn sessions to beat no. 8 seed James Else (GBR). No. 28 seed Julia Schwarz (GBR), who was that last UK World Champion, finished in 3rd place with a tiebreak win over no. 13 seed and former double World Junior Champion Simon Wright (GBR).
The Plate competition for those knocked out in the early rounds was won by Sweden's Angelique Pizzignacco.
