World Tantrix Championship Draw - Method

Introduction:

The World Tantrix Championship draw takes place in the Tantrix lobby at 10.30 GMT on Wednesday 1 September. A seeded draw is really very simple to operate, but if you are going to 'watch' the draw in the lobby, it might appear a bit strange if you haven't looked at this page first because it's not simply a case of drawing out the Round 1 pairings one by one. This page explains exactly what will happen and, with the help of two diagrams, what it all means in terms of match-ups.

Hint - if you know how seeded draws work in general, you can ignore most of the explanation and just page down to the diagrams to see exactly how it will work in this case, though you may also want to look at the notes just above the main draw diagram which explain how the physical draw will be done.

The Two Knockout Competitions:

The main World Championship starts with a 64-player seeded draw. This is what we will be drawing on 1 September. The top 8 seeds will get byes in Round 1 if the number of entrants remains at 56. You only get one chance - lose a match and you're out.

However, there is a also a consolation competition for players who lose in Rounds 1 or 2, so even if you lose to a top seed in Round 1, there's still something to play for. This is usually called a Plate competition because in some sports, the winner wins an engraved plate. In fact, the prize here is the closest we can get to a plate shape - it's a Tantrix CD! Please note that this competition is separate - it is not a second chance to actually win the World Championship.

The Main World Championship Draw:

The top two seeds are placed at the top and bottom of the draw automatically. Apologies for not managing to stop the two professional Tantrix players from being the top two seeds, but unfortunately Mike foiled my plan by winning the Pacific Championship a few days ago! The remaining players will be split into "seed groups" - seeds 3 & 4 in the first one, seeds 5-8 in the second, 9-16 in the third, 17-32 in the fourth and unseeded players in the fifth.

The Kowalczyks will be doing the physical draw in Australia using a set of numbered Tantrix tiles. There's no point in bribing them :-), because I will have randomised the numbers within each seeding group by computer, so for example number 5 may be any of seeds 5, 6, 7 or 8. The Kowalczyks won't know which player they've drawn until I look at my list and tell them. Don't worry - I can't 'fix' the draw either - the exact structure is shown below and I will send my randomised list to Mike before the draw, so there's no way I can change it if I don't like it! :-(

The draw will be done seed group by seed group. Looking at the diagram after the next paragraph (please reduce your browser font size if it looks a mess!), first tiles 3 and 4 are put into the bag. Alex or Zenon will draw one of the tiles out. If it's number 4, say, I'll look at the randomised list to see if that is Seed 3 or Seed 4 ... Alex or Zenon in fact :-) - whoever it is will go into draw position 32, the other will go into draw position 33.

Next, tiles 5, 6, 7 and 8 will go into the bag and be drawn to fill draw positions 16, 17, 48 and 49 in that order. Those who are thinking fast will already be able to work out potential quarter-final match-ups! However, we won't know the Round 1 match-ups until the final group, the unseeded players, are drawn to fill the remaining spaces.

The Plate Competition Draw:

Ther's no need to do a separate draw for this - it follows from the main draw as you will see in the diagram after the next paragraph. The match numbers starting 1 and 2 refer to matches shown in the main draw above, those starting P refer to Round 1 Plate matches.

As you can see below, main draw Round 1 losers play in Plate Round 1 (there may be some byes) and the winners of those matches play the losers from main draw Round 2, then the knockout proceeds as normal. The Round 2 losers have been distributed so that if you lose to one of the top 8 seeds in main draw Round 1, you won't have to play another one of the top 8 seeds in Plate Rounds 1 or 2 if they happen to have suffered a surprise loss early in the main draw.
