1999 WORLD TANTRIX - ROUND 2 PREVIEW
Round 2 is where the serious matches really start. We're up to 5 games per match now and all of the top seeds are playing. This round had already managed to produce the biggest "shock" result so far - no. 18 seed Justin, the master of the tactic of sacrificing time penalties to make sure of winning a game, knocking out No. 7 seed jzyhk in a close match.
The match of the round looks likely to be the French duel between papillon and lolo. They were very unlucky to get paired this early but for the rest of us there is the prospect of a great match and I wouldn't like to even hazard a guess at the outcome.
Another intriguing tie is mikem-Marina - the McManaway family match which neither player is looking forward to and which may test domestic harmony in Nelson. ;-)
Can either of the unseeded players reach Round 3? Well, maybe, but both have tough tests - Mighty has to play No. 11 seed Tell and Pfire is paired with No. 4 seed Zazza.
Other top 10 seeds with matches which look particularly dangerous are: AlexK, who has to play regit; Pepe, paired with a player he claims as one of his Tantrix 'students', Scarab; steven2, who has to play Iznogoud who (despite his nickname!) has one of the best lobby records this month and wins against quite a few of the top players to his credit. Having said that, none of the top 16 seeds have easy matches and shocks could well come from any part of the draw. It promises to be an interesting 12 days!
