This small but strong group dominated by three Queenslanders saw a big shock as no. 1 seed Leah went

out. Her demise can be traced back to the very first match, when new 'star' Janette won 2 games against

her and drew the third and indeed Leah is the only seed not to reach the KO phase this year. Janette

ended up topping the group and will play no. 6 seed Garry Laishley in the QFs while no. 5 seed Kathy,

the last Australian to win something when she won the Plate last year, will play the reigning champion

and no. 4 seed Josh Button in what could be the best match of the quarter-final round.

An exceptionally close group finished in disappointment for Nigel when he lost two of his three games v

Sam to fall out of the qualifying places at the final hurdle, though he has the consolation of knowing that

his performance was a huge improvement on last year. Reigning champion & no. 4 seed Josh won Group

C by just 5.4 TPs and will play 2002 Plate winner and no. 5 seed Kathy Upton (QLD) in the QFs, while 2nd

placed Garry Laishley will face unseeded Janette MacKenzie (QLD), the unexpected winner of Group A.

impressive tournament débutant Ned at the very last moment. Anthony will play Group B winner and

runner-up Paul Hirst (VIC) in another of the QFs. Ned will no doubt challenge even more strongly in 2004!
